Trait Ecology Initiative Malaysia (TEIM)

The conservation of our dwindling biodiversity demands rapid information gathering, yet we inefficiently assess the risks of our 170,000 species one-by-one in Malaysia. The solution is trait ecology that synthesises discrete species into continuous life-history spectra, but we are also slow to leverage transferable knowledge from this growing and exciting field. There is an urgent need to modernise our mode of operation.

Vision and Mission

We are establishing the Trait Ecology Initiative Malaysia (TEIM) to accelerate ecological research and conservation in Malaysia’s megadiverse ecosystems and cities. Grounded in Malaysia’s National Policy on Biological Diversity (NPBD 2022-2030) and anchoring UN SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), TEIM is more than just a research group; it’s a movement towards knowledge ownership, intellectual independence, and impactful conservation in Malaysia.

What We Offer

We aim to enhance—not complicate—your existing work. This initiative is a grassroots effort. We understand the constraints of budgets and overheads, so we focus on collaborative tools and shared resources to maximise our impact. We offer:

  • Peer knowledge sharing to exchange taxonomic, ecological and programming expertise.
  • Student tutorials focusing on trait concepts and data analysis workflows.
  • Low-cost collaborative tools and shared resources to support ongoing fieldwork without adding administrative burdens.

Research Themes in Malaysia

To foster targeted collaboration, we anticipate specialized sub-groups forming around key ecological and environmental themes:

  • Climate Resilience & Carbon Cycling
  • Species and Ecosystem Service Risk Assessment

Who Should Join

We welcome researchers spanning taxonomy, ecology and programming. Trait-based ecology is highly compatible with and improves ongoing research rather than requiring a you to abandon current methods; it offers new analytical dimensions to your current projects.

MYtraits Database

Our primary infrastructure is MYtraits, a taxonomically-harmonised plant trait database that is homegrown. Based on AusTraits (an established, high-impact Australian database), MYtraits aims to secure local data equity and capacity building with a complete collaborative platform.
